Thompson Ave, Mountain View – Eichler Remodeling

Mountain View

GMJ Construction was brought in to remodel a classic Eichler home in Mountain View with a clear goal: modernize the property without losing the architectural details that make Eichler homes so iconic. The homeowners wanted a bright, calm, and functional home with clean finishes, natural wood tones, and a layout that felt open and effortless. The project focused on updating the kitchen, bathrooms, living areas, flooring, lighting, and interior finishes while maintaining the original post-and-beam feel, vaulted ceilings, and indoor-outdoor connection.

Project Challenges

Preserving Eichler Character:
The home needed modern upgrades while still respecting its mid-century architecture, clean rooflines, exposed structure, and open-plan design.

Creating a Cohesive Interior:
Every material had to feel intentional, from the warm wood cabinetry to the white ceiling treatment, quartz surfaces, black fixtures, and soft neutral tones.

Balancing Light and Privacy:
The remodel needed to maximize natural light through large windows and sliding doors while keeping the home comfortable and private for daily living.

Modernizing Without Overbuilding:
The design had to feel fresh and elevated without overpowering the simple, timeless Eichler style.

Solutions & Strategy

Design and Planning

GMJ Construction approached the remodel with a preservation-first mindset. The goal was not to erase the home’s original identity, but to bring it forward with cleaner finishes, better functionality, and a more polished design. The team focused on natural textures, warm wood, crisp white surfaces, and simple architectural lines.

Key Renovation Areas

Kitchen:

The kitchen was redesigned as a bright, modern centerpiece of the home. Custom flat-panel wood cabinetry was installed to create a clean, streamlined look while adding warmth to the space. A large waterfall-style island was added for prep space, storage, and everyday gathering.

Quartz countertops and a matching slab backsplash gave the kitchen a seamless, high-end finish. Stainless steel appliances, a modern range hood, and improved lighting completed the space while keeping the design minimal and timeless.

Living and Common Spaces:

The open living and dining areas were updated to feel brighter, larger, and more connected. The white paneled ceiling and exposed beams were preserved and refreshed, helping maintain the Eichler character while creating a clean modern backdrop.

Wide-plank wood flooring was installed throughout the home to add warmth and continuity. Large sliding glass doors helped strengthen the connection to the backyard and brought more natural light into the main living area.

Fireplace and Feature Wall:

A modern wood slat feature wall was added around the fireplace, giving the living room a warm architectural focal point. This detail tied into the kitchen cabinetry and brought texture to the otherwise clean, open space.

Bathrooms:

The bathrooms were remodeled with a soft, modern palette and high-end finishes. Frameless glass shower enclosures, large-format tile, matte black fixtures, and wood vanities created a spa-like feel while staying consistent with the home’s mid-century influence.

The vanities introduced a custom look with fluted wood detailing, quartz countertops, and clean hardware. Updated lighting, mirrors, and plumbing fixtures brought each bathroom up to modern comfort standards.

Windows, Doors, and Indoor-Outdoor Flow:

Black-framed windows and sliders were used to create contrast and frame views to the exterior. This helped maintain the Eichler focus on natural light and outdoor connection while giving the home a more current appearance.

“GMJ Construction did an incredible job bringing our Eichler back to life. The home feels modern, open, and beautifully finished, but it still has the warmth and character we loved from the beginning. Every detail feels thoughtful, and the craftsmanship is excellent.”
